Why: Well, you know that PQ = 7x+12 and QR = 3x+16. You also know that Q is the midpoint. So, because Q is the midpoint, you would set (PQ)7x+12 and (QR)3x+16 equal to eachother. After solving the equation of 7x+12=3x+16, you end up with x equaling one. Then, you plug one into the spot of the x. 7(1)+12 and 3(1)+16 -- Coming out with 19 as the length of PR. 19 = 19.
